Barker’s of Geraldine is one of New Zealand’s favourite home-grown family businesses. Based in Geraldine, South Canterbury, the Barker family has been crafting delicious fruit preserves, chutneys and syrups for over six generations.
It was established on the family farm in 1969 by inventor Anthony Barker who, after learning his mother’s skills for preserving fruit, went on to develop a successful cottage industry with a wild elderberry wine as his first product. This was followed by blackcurrant liqueurs, syrups, fruit spreads, jams, marmalades, chutneys, pickles and savoury sauces.
Barker’s products are available from supermarkets throughout New Zealand. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in-store, just visit their website www.barkers.co.nz and place an order online. Next time you are visiting Geraldine, remember to stop by the iconic Barker’s shop, where you can sample the entire range of products, purchase gift baskets and send products all over the world.

Review 1 – Barkers – Vegelife
This stuff is amazing We were lucky enough to be given some to try. My husband and I drunk a lot of vege juice while in Europe for 5 years so were keen to see if it was as good. Needless to say it is the best we have found in NZ. It is very smooth and pleasant to drink and does not leave any funny after-taste.
What I like about this juice is that it is all natural. Because it is a concentrate we are able to make it to our own taste. I personally find the mix they suggest too sweet so I just add a little more water to mine. My toddler has a very watered down version as he does not particularly like juice, but this is one he will ask for more of.
Congratulations Barkers on yet another fine product and I cannot wait to go and try the other flavours in this range.
Review 2 – Barkers – Vegelife
My husband was looking forward to trying this as he’s a fan of vege juice type drinks, but I have to admit that it wasn’t something that appealed to me. I mean other ones I’ve tried have had that ‘earthy’ aftertaste which I don’t particularly like.
However, when Mark came in with a glass made up, and raving about how amazing it was, I figured I should at least give it a go and I am so glad I did.
It has half a cup of vegetables and half a cup of fruit in every glass once it’s made up with water and it would be an amazing way to help hit the 5+ a day for you and the kids.
Because they saw me drinking it, the kids decided that they wanted to give it a go and guess what…….they LOVED it as well. So not only did it convert me, but I now have a healthier option for my kids.
Review 3 – Barkers – Lemon Curd
If I’m going to buy lemon honey or lemon curd at all, I usually look for the Barker’s version. The jars look so inviting. From the shape of the jar, to the homely look of the labels, I just love Barker’s products.
I have a jar of this in my fridge as I type. Though there isn’t much left! I love the taste of this lemon curd. Its not overpowerly sweet, with a slight tartness to it. I really don’t like stuff that is too sweet. It makes it harder to eat by the spoonful
Its a good consistency, and I can easily use this in baking as well as being a yummy spread for my toast. I’ll continue to buy this product because it’s just so good. I’m successfully converting my daughter to the taste as well (she is a die-hard chocolate spread fiend)
Review 4 – Barkers – Lemon Curd
When I first saw this I was so excited to get the opportunity to review it as I LOVE Lemon Curd. And yes, the first thing I did when I got it home was have some toast
The first thing I noticed about this product was the thick and smooth consistency of the spread. It was so easy to spread, I was very impressed as other Lemon spreads I have tried tend to be a bit on the runny side.
As for the taste … I was a little disappointed, it doesn’t taste like other Lemon spreads I have tried in the past. It has more of a marmalade flavour and was not very sweet like I am used to. Luckily enough, I quite like marmalade and I really enjoyed the flavour (even though it didn’t taste like Lemon Curd much). I also felt it could have had more of a lemon flavour.
Overall I did enjoy this spread and will continue to do so (I still have some left).
Review 5 – Barkers – Lemon Curd
My recipe for mini jam tarts actually called for this (It was originally called Lemon tarts), but with the variety of Barkers jams and spreads I changed the recipe around. I have found also if you put a chocolate drop or button on top it adds an interesting twist.
this is my favourite of all their spreads and the one I use most often with the jam tart recipe.
Review 5 – Barkers – Lemon Curd
I love Barkers Lemon Curd. Have tried various others in NZ and found them all too sweet but Barkers is just right. A great lemon curd.
Review 6 – Barkers – Lemon Curd
I generally make my own Lemon curd, so this is the first time I have really tried a non home made version. I was actually surprised at how home made it tasted. It didnt tasted artificial at all. SO if I ever needed to buy some I would absolutely Buy Barkers Without thinking! It was smooth and creamy.
Review 7 – Barkers – Lemon Curd
This is a favourite of mine; I regularly buy the Barkers Lemon Curd. Like Rebekah; I usually make my own – because I love the actual taste of lemon in my lemon curd. Which often store-brought ones don’t have. However; I do love the Barkers version. It tastes sooo similar to the one I make at home. A little sweeter, but only slightly. I put it on toast, sandwiches, in lemon meringue pie, muffins, and even just eating it straight from the jar.. (woops, maybe thats why I go through so much). In terms of why I like it so much, It has a nice thick consistency – while still having the smoothness that a curd should have. The product actually tastes like lemon, and I don’t actually think the price is too unreasonable. It saves a lot of time to make a nice lemon curd, because it’s straight from the jar! So it’s also very convenient. I’d give this a 8/10 (because I do find it a little sweeter than my home made recipe, and I like my lemon curd with a little bit more tart).
