  1. Review courtesy of Chef Kevin Blakeman

I have been cooking for my son now ever since he moved onto solids, he’s 10 months old and I just wanted a book to make sure I was giving him a completely balanced diet. As a chef it wasn’t necessarily a recipe book I needed but maybe a book that combined knowledge and recipes. An early scare with Henry (the 10 month old)in which he was sick from Kumara and had a reaction to egg left me a little nervous in moving to the next stage and introducing certain foods but we got there and it was time to step it up a gear.
I was recommended a book called New Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner by Annabel Karmel. The best thing about the book is it wasn’t just page after page of recipes it was broken down into age groups and at the beginning of each section is a very personal feeling description of the stage and tips on what and how to do things with the food. The author gives the impression she is talking about her own child all the way.
The next part is the recipes and although I was using my own it was nice to see that there are certain ingredients that I was holding back on that are now in my repertoire of baby food including the fact I now feed him a cauliflower cheese with cow’s milk, flour and butter something I wouldn’t of dreamed of pre reading the book.
The final part of the structure was the most helpful and it was a menu planner, this was very detailed and gave you a whole weeks’ worth of meals, mainly helpful because you can see the balance of meals very clearly in the book.
I was certainly enlightened by the book and because of this things like salmon have become an essential part of my baby’s diet as his brain grows and this is why I am very happy to recommend this book to anyone.
