‘Once upon a time, a mysterious time that exists through a window in your mind, a time that seemed, to those present, exactly like now does to us, except their teeth weren’t so clean and more things were wooden, there was a town called Hamelin …’ In the first in his series of Trickster Tales, Russell Brand retells the classic children’s story The Pied Piper of Hamelin. You’ll be enchanted and revolted in equal measure by the host of characters you meet along the way: the anarchic rats, the arrogant townspeople, sharp-eyed Sam and of course the Pied Piper himself, all brought to life in Brand’s inimitable style and with the illustrations of Costa Award-winner Chris Riddell. ‘

  1. To be honest I was not entirely sure what to expect from this book, so when I sat down to read it I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. Its The Pied Piper of Hamelin told in a brilliant way with sarcasim and big words which are so nicely explained. The story is straight forward and although I can not remember the original story I am sure it must be the same.
I loved how each page was new and exciting. No boring white pages with plan writing in this book – no instead you have pink pages or blue with zany over sized writing or wacky small writing. Although not my usual type of pictures that I like they really work in this book.
The rats where yucky and ate and destroyed everything but in truth the towns people were worst, a great story about teaching each other the value of manners and caring for one another and knowing that no one is better than the next.
I read it alone but I think its okay to read to the girls for there next bedtime story.
